Our view: Yes! Yes! Yes! This Tour has it all – amazing roads, great scenery, historical interest, traditional experiences and superb hotels. We really have found some of the best roads we have ever ridden. There are no long days so it will definitely suit pillions: Riders MUST be capable of handling lots of twisties!
This tour starts & finishes at Santander, Spain and from your afternoon arrival we take a direct route to our 4* hotel in the heart of the Asturias. Based next to the historic old town and the “Boulevard de Sidre” a traditional dinner of tapas with sangria & cider is included tonight in a nearby restaurant.
The next day we ride through Galicia, criss-crossing the Camino de Santiago, over the Puerto del Palo, with fabulous sweepers (if you thought the B500 was good wait ’til you ride this!). Tonight we stay in the centre of Santiago de Compostela in a 4* Historic Monument Hotel with an indoor swimming pool, and you have a free night to explore the tapas bars in the old city.
Day three it’s twisties galore into Portugal. After riding through the National Parks of the Suido, Serra da Peneda and across the Serra do Geres we have a late afternoon arrival at our rural “Quinta” where you’ll be ready to relax in the huge swimming pool. Dinner with drinks is included tonight.
With lakes, rivers, orange & lemon groves, and more twisty mountain roads through the National Park do Alvao this day has everything. Our 4* boutique hotel for the next two nights is right in the centre of Guimaraes, the birthplace of Portugal, whose old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This evening is at your leisure and there are numerous restaurants and bars to choose from.
Day five is a day off. With no organised ride-out why not explore Portugal’s oldest city or perhaps take the train to Porto. The day and evening are at your leisure.
Leaving Guimaraes the next day we head South to the Douro river, with great scenery, more twisties through vineyards and riding the flowing N222 we then have a surprise in store for lunch (included). With more twisties, hairpins & sweepers we arrive at our 4* hotel in a medieval town where dinner & drinks are again included.
Day seven and today it’s the Serra da Estrela. Riding brilliant mountain roads we stop at Torre, the highest point in Portugal at 1998m. With a late afternoon arrival you’ll have plenty of time to relax in the pool and admire the stunning views from our 4* hotel, our base for the next two nights. Dinner and drinks are included tonight.
On day eight either chill out around the pool or join us on an optional ride-out to enjoy more of the amazing roads in this region, with a stop at one of Portugal’s most famous villages. Dinner and drinks are included again tonight.
Today we head back into Spain alongside the Serra de Bornes, through the Serra de Nogueira and the National Park of Montesinho where millions of pine trees are covered in the amazing Pine Processional Caterpillars. We stop for coffee in Wolf country then ride through the Sierra de la Cabrera, alongside the Sierra del Teleno to our 3* hotel near to the Mountains of Leon. Situated in the town square, close to the Cathedral and Gaudi Palace, this is a free night and there are many restaurants nearby to chose from.
Day 10 we head into Cantabrica and ride through the Picos Mountains (watch out for storks in their huge nests). With coffee & lunch stops en-route to our final hotel where dinner and drinks are included on our last night.
Day 11 we head back to Santander in time for the afternoon Brittany Ferries crossing to Plymouth which arrives the next day (Friday).
Total mileage for the Tour: 1350 miles (excl ride-out), longest day 230 miles, no peage motorway
This will be a fully guided motorbike tour with a luggage van – following the same routes as the bikes – included in the price. The routes have been extensively researched and as we stop every hour and a half for coffee, lunch or fuel, pillions will not be too long in the saddle. We always use a “second man drop off” marker system with a tail end rider so you will not need to refer to maps or sat-navs and as we limit the number of bikes on a tour to a maximum of 15 no-one is kept waiting too long.
The hotels we have chosen are all independent, five have a 4* rating and three have a 3* rating. Four have swimming pools. Secure parking is either in the hotel garage or grounds or manned public parking. Full details of all hotels will be provided in the tour pack which is sent out 3 – 4 weeks before the tour starts.
Bike garages are very few and far between so PLEASE make sure you have sufficient tyre tread and brake pads (!) to finish the tour.
